Situation

  • Madagascar has seasonal malaria transmission and is a major cause of morbidity among the general population.
  • For our client, malaria was the leading cause of lost work days among its local employees.
  • A malaria control programme had been established at its main site in Mandena.
  • Our client was also expanding operations to a new area – St Luce.

Solution

  • Montrose was contracted to carry out an audit of our client’s malaria control programme at Mandena and design a new malaria control programme for the future operations at St Luce.
  • The audit at Mandena included reviewing vector control interventions, case management, malaria surveillance and programme management.
  • The programme design work at St Luce included carrying out an assessment of malaria risk, proposing appropriate vector control interventions and estimating human and financial resource requirements.

Impact

  • In addition to reviewing the measures already in place, the audit assessed options for expanding the inside-the-fence malaria control programme to outside-the-fence control to protect affected communities.
