Situation

  • There is a great need in Sierra Leone for reconstructive surgery for trauma, burns, birth defects and infections.
  • Because of high prevalence and severe shortage of treatment facilities, the World Health Organisation has identified these interventions as priorities for low-income countries.
  • Resurge Africa set out to create a sustainable surgical unit in Sierra Leone to address this need.

Solution

  • Montrose will conduct the independent evaluation of the project funded by Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA).
  • The evaluation will serve as a learning exercise to inform Resurge Africa’s future work in constructing facilities and training surgeons in burns and reconstructive surgery.
  • Montrose will also conduct an organisational evaluation to assist and advise the charity in its strategic direction for the next five years.

Impact

  • Montrose’s independent evaluation will support Resurge Africa in its strengthening of health facilities in low-income countries.
  • We will also support the charity in its ability to monitor and report on projects by developing evaluation tools that can be adapted for future use.
  • This in turn will strengthen the charity’s position when applying for grants in the future.
